Asphalt Milling Best Practices Document from NIOSH

A new document defining the best practices for asphalt milling has been announced by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) as part of a national Silica/Asphalt Milling Machine Partnership.

Labor, industry and government groups collaborated for ten years and found that asphalt milling machines with well-designed dust controls can reduce worker exposure to respirable crystalline silica during asphalt milling operations. The new document, Best Practice Engineering Control Guidelines to Control Worker Exposure to Respirable Crystalline Silica during Asphalt Pavement Milling, provides recommendations to the industry for controlling silica-containing dust. It also provides guidance for manufacturers of asphalt milling machines so that they can evaluate current and future dust controls.
