Case Studies

Engaging stakeholders in improving the quality of OSH decision-making in construction projects is a research to practice report that illustrates the importance of early OSH intervention in construction projects.


Project Case Studies

The following are Project Case Studies. Features of work were selected as the unit of analysis because they presented a particular health and safety problem or challenge.

1) Blacksburg House - The project involved in this case study was the construction of a house in a neighborhood in Blacksburg, Virginia.

2) Cafeteria - The project involved in this case study was the construction of a university dining hall on a side of campus that needed one.The project involved in this case study was the installation of a hot oil economizer onto a unit in a chemical plant to improve the plant’s operational efficiency.

3) Chemical Plant - The project involved in this case study was the installation of a hot oil economizer onto a unit in a chemical plant to improve the plant’s operational efficiency.

4) Coal Plant - The project involved in this case study was the installation of a scrubber unit onto a coal plant. This particular coal plant was a poor environmental performer and faced closure if appropriate measures were not taken to curb emissions.

5) Football Stadium - The project involved in this case study was the expansion of a university football stadium.

6) HH (Habitat for Humanity) - The project involved in this case study was a pair of homes built by volunteers for a local Habitat for Humanity chapter.

7) Hospital - The project featured in this case study was the construction of a new 9 story, 780,000 square foot hospital with a 3 story diagnostic and treatment building.

8) ICC (Intercounty Connector) - The project involved in this case study was the construction of a 6.9 mile stretch of the Intercounty Connector.

9) Mountain House - The project involved in this case study was the construction of a 2,500ft2 house just outside of Blacksburg, Virginia.

10) Psychiatric Hospital - The project involved in this case study was the construction of a new psychiatric hospital.

11) Richmond Highway - The project involved in this case study was a state highway maintenance and reconstruction project in a major city.

12) Roanoke House - The project involved in this case study was the construction of a house in Roanoke, Virginia.

13) Server Farm - The project featured in this case study was the renovation and partial demolition of an existing manufacturing plant for use as a server farm.

14) Wastewater Tank - The project involved in this case study was the construction of a wastewater tank to help the system manage overflows and allow the utility to comply with EPA requirements.
